Kunde Estate Winery(Cave Tour & Taste)
Since 1904, four generations of Kundes have lived, worked and produced
grapes on the same property in the Sonoma Valley. Founder Louis Kunde
immigrated to California from Germany in 1884, and in 1904 he bought
Wildwood Vineyards, which had first been planted in 1879. The present
Kunde family ranch in Kenwood encompasses 2,000 acres and stretches
for a mile and a half along the Sonoma Highway and extends from the
valley floor, sloping up into the mountains. The Kunde family recently
built a new winery on the site of an historic old barn, imitating the
barn's style. To age their wine, the Kunde's created more than 32,000
feet of tunnels in the hillside directly behind the winery, providing
and ideal environment for storing wine naturally. At the farthest reaches
of the tunnels, a spacious tasting room has been carved into the rock.
Furnished with huge tables and benches - handcrafted of timbers saved
from the original old barn - the room is surrounded by scenic vineyards
that slope down to the picnic grounds, where tasters can enjoy a picnic
lunch. |

Valley of The Moon Winery (Taste)
This charming winery is situated in a 57-year-old Zinfandel vineyard.
Previously owned by General Mariano Vallejo and the prominent Senator
George Hearst, father of newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst.
It has operated longer than any other winery in the Glen Ellen area.
The 19th Century stone building was originally built in 1887. It has
been reinforced and remodeled into a delightful tasting room. Pinot
Blanc, Chardonnay, Sangiovese, Syrah and of course Zinfandel are some
of the fine wines to sample. |
